Amos E. Hower
A Civil War Soldier, “True and Tried”
Amos E. Hower was born in 1840 near New Berlin. In August of 1862, he enlisted in Company E of the 104 regiment of the Ohio Infantry. He was always ready for duty and took part in many engagements including the Siege of Knoxville, the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, and the Siege of Nashville. He survived multiple shots that killed the man next to him. He remained in active service until June of 1865. He was well-liked by his neighbors and an original member of the New Berlin Citizens Band. He died in a farming accident at the age of 36.6 (Basner 229-30) .
