Der Roth
The Drummer
One of the “odd characters….prominent” in New Berlin was an old German tramp, named Der Roth Deitsch. He was known to do no work of any kind. He carried a bundle of old clothes on his back. He “was a most accomplished drummer [who] would rattle on the seat of a chair with his old drum-sticks, which he always carried on top of his bundle and would really make pretty good music.” (Basner 209)
