John (Hensey)
Schiltz
The Jovial Belgian Settler
John D. Schiltz, known as Hensey, was a native of Belgium who settled in New Berlin. In his early years, he did odd jobs including shoemaking and repair. He was “always boiling over with fun. He was the most jovial person in town and many are the droll tricks by which he will be remembered.” He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He died in 1869 at the age of 66 (Basner 240).
