The Smokestack

Our Iconic Skyline

In 1920, the Hoover Suction Company began construction of a power plant that would require a 200 foot smoke stack. This was a huge source of pride in the company and the town. The iconic smoke stack with its white enameled brick spelling out HOOVER has been the main feature of our skyline ever since. In 2014, a brick fell from the stack and an inspection revealed that the mortar was degrading. International Chimney Corporation took down and rebuilt the stack in 2015; they list the Hoover chimney as one of their proud historic reconstructions along with Ellis Island and West Point Academy (Canton Repository 3 Dec. 2014).
